Med school, no full stop

Bismillahi rahmani raheem.

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious and Most Merciful. I pray to Allah for His blessing and mercy upon all of us in this holy month of Ramadhan, the most awaited month alhamdulillah. Ramadhan kareem to everyone!! :)

Verily, there is no God but Allah and Prophet Muhammad SAW is His Messenger. I seek forgiveness from Allah for all of my shortcomings and weaknesses from the day He created me till the day I die.
‘O Allah, You are the great Forgiver, You love forgiving, so please forgive all of us..

Alhamdulillah, tsumma alhamdulillah. There is no other word or act that can replace the saying of hamdalah continuously and prostration to Allah SWT as a means to express my syukur, gratitude upon all of His blessing now and then.

End with medical school. End with tutorials, bedside teachings, portfolios, case write up, various types of continuous assessments and quizzes.

End with medical school. Life afterwards will be full with ward rounds, on calls, clerking jobs and despatch jobs. All of the cases in the wards are your long cases, and short cases will be seen in the clinics. Exam is everyday, every hour, every minute.

End with medical school. But you still need the anatomy notes from your first year of medicine, those thick textbooks of physiology, microbiology, pathology, medicine and surgery. You still have to refer to your pocket notes (which if you were to pile up all of these pocket notes, it will be thicker than your textbook!)

End with medical school. Very often during the houseman period, you’ll be condemned that you are not reading enough. The usual comment would be-‘Go back and read!’. During that moment you’ll be cursing yourself for not able to memorize it well, and you’ll be wondering how did you pass med school at the first place. Sigh.

Opss. I’m not whining. I’m just throwing my thoughts on how paradox it is when you’ve graduated from med school, the ‘school’ is actually never ends!

Yup, full stop doesn’t exist in medicine..

And this is the beauty of knowledge.
The more you learn, the more you don’t know.
Continuous learning process. The concept that all of us are well informed before we sail to the sea of journey called medicine.

I pray to Allah to make all of us steadfast and strong mentally, physically and emotionally in facing our future in this path. Renew our intention(niat), never stop make doa, and continuously support each other.

InsyaAllah.

So long, penang!

Dear blog

Assalamualaikum wbt,

Bismillahi Rahmaanir Raheem.

All praises to Allah, The Almighty God, the Creator and the Sustainer. I bear witness that there is no other God worthy of worship except Allah, and Prophet Muhammad SAW is His Messenger.

It has been a while since I wrote my last blog post. I thought I would be able to maintain to post monthly even a short line of sentence but apparently I didn't manage to do so. At the moment my friends and I are fighting in revising everything we could for our final year exams. Yup, for our very last exam in med school insyaAllah.

Many time it came across my mind that I wouldn't be able to finish revising all topic. The workload is very huge and the stuffs to memorize are just too much at this little time. Sometimes I was disturbed by the anxiety and worry of the exam everytime I meet my friends or go to the wards. Everyone looks stress, but we never forget to support each other. After all final med is about passing the exams together...

At this moment, I prayed to Allah to keep us in faith all the time, ease our difficulties, lift up the anxiety and shower us with Allah's Mercy. O' Allah, I am worried if I were too carried away with this dunya. Please help us to make this examinations as part of ibadah, in striving to be a better Muslim. O' Allah, please forgive me for all of my sins and ignorance, guide me with Your Nuur and please do not leave me to myself even for the twinkling of the eye. Ya Rabb, I put my life into Your Hands...

Amin ya Rabbal Alamin.

Open your horizon

I know it's beyond the border.
So you can see better :)
Ouh. But this picture got nothing to do with the issue.

Assalamualaikum wbt

Today's date gonna be exactly 3 months before my graduation day. It's a good time to look back on what I've been through all this while, especially when the SPM results was just released a few days ago.

So, which pathway are you gonna choose next?

Medicine? Em.
You sure? No regret?

Since the previous years until now, medicine never fails to attract those SPM high achievers to choose this field as one of their most desired career. Well, at this moment, if you were to ask me whether you should choose medicine or not, I would advice you to think about it again. Have you read enough stories and comments from people in the medical field about what are they facing everyday? Have you been aware of the current condition about houseman, MO's or even the specialists or consultants on the problems they are dealing with currently-the glut of doctors and the ineffective systems?

Well, don't get me wrong. I am not writing this post to criticize your option to join medical field-in fact I'll be one of the people in the system too by end of this year insyaAllah. Medicine has been my passion since I was young. Being given the chance to study medicine is a great gift from Allah. But of course, with hard work and tears before I am able to call myself a medical student.

My parents didn't ask me to become a doctor. I made the choice on my own. The funny thing is when I was in 4th med, I asked ummi whether she would allow any of my sisters to follow my career pathway. Her answer was expected.
'Takpalah, cukuplah kamu seorang je yang jadi doktor dalam keluarga. Jenuh ummi tengok.'
Huhu. Thanks to my family for supporting me throughout the journey. I'm almost there!! ^_^

I'm sorry if I've gave you a negative thoughts about medicine. It isn't that bad actually, if you stay being positive at all times. The people around, the workloads, sacrifice and the agony will definitely test your patience. A reminder for you and me: keep having faith in Allah, and be a good Muslim doctor.

I believe a lot of people has been writing on this issue once SPM results was out. Open your horizon, medicine is not the only available field for your tertiary study. There are a lot more things to learn and experience other than medicine and engineering(these two courses are commonly chosen by the science school students. There were 30 students in my form 5 class back in 2006, and if im not mistaken 16 of us already/will be graduating as a doctors. Waa). If you don't like medicine, please don't do it. If you're forced to do medicine ie by your parents, I hope you'll get some help to persuade them to allow you to follow your interest. Because at the end of the day, it is YOU and the PATIENT who will suffer the outcome.

Talk to your seniors, go to any career talks, refer to internet sources about the courses, universities etc. And last but not least, I highly recommend you to come/tell your juniors/spread the word around about this event (refer picture below). Part of my mind setting and motivation before I started my tertiary education was gained after I attended this program in 2007.

Excellence is not about having good grades.
It is about having the knowledge and experiences that turns you into better person, and benefiting the ummah.
'Alim mujahid.

Home birth

Assalamualaikum wbt

Long ago when i was in the primary school, my friends and i were used to look at each other's birth certificates as all of us need to bring a copy of it during our first day of school every year to hand it over to our class teacher. We usually talked about which hospital that we were born, what time, our birth date-whether easier to remember or not and etc.
And the normal chit-chat would be-
'I was born in this hosp-very far from where i lived now-'
'I was born in that hosp-we didn't move anywhere since then-' OR
'I was born overseas-but i can't remember anything about being there-sadly'
Urm, nothing special. But suddenly all of them will give their weird look at me when i said:
"I was born at home". Hee.
*peace*

All of my siblings except me were born in the hospital. My brother was quite sick at that time when my mom was due to deliver me. He needs ummi very very much and ummi couldn't leave him just like that-and there was where i came in.

So it was an unplanned home birth. A midwife was called to attend the delivery. Ummi said she experienced an obstructed labour-she described it as my head was pulled back into the perineum (i imagined it as 'turtle sign' which classically referring to shoulder dystocia, where the anterior shoulder of the fetus become caught under the symphysis pubis) but my mother was told that it was umbilical cord strangulation that cause the obstruction.

The controversial part of the story was when the panicked midwife called a traditional midwife(bidan kampung) to help with the delivery(you see, this should be an emergency as i was stuck over there-and my mom was in severe pain-why didn't she call the hospital at the first place?). And yes the bidan managed to help me at the end. All praises to Allah for protecting my mom and me.

There was a lot of grey area in this story as I doubted the actual diagnosis and how did I manage to survive without any medical equipment to monitor me and my mother's condition. I wonder what could be my Apgar score at that time. Anyway here I am still surviving the world under Allah's mercy.

My actual point from this story is: anything can go wrong during the delivery. Even if you are at low-risk for complication, it's better to stay at the center where specialist help is there for you.

I would like to share with you below an article written by Prof Madya Dr Rafidah Hanim Mokhtar, from Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, USIM. I copied the article from Dr. Zainurrashid's blog. You can find the link here.

**************************************************

"There is this wide misconception that natural means Islamic. Natural means leaving things in the hands of Allah SWT. Active interventions mean otherwise, that one is not having enough faith because one depends too much on another human, or on technologies.
This is wrong.
WEIGHING MAQASID AL SHARIAT IN MODERN MEDICINE
I have had the privilege to be an academician in medical faculties of 2 esteemed institutions, previously in IIUM and currently in USIM. Students in both institutions are taught that Islam covers a wide approach in investigation and treatment and that includes a holistic scope. Students are taught on the concept of maqasid al shariat, or purpose of law.
There are 5 purposes of law (maqasid al shariat):
1. preservation of morals and religion (hifdh al diin)
2. protection and maintenance of human life (hifdh al nafs)
3. protection of the human intelect (hifdh al aql)
4. protection of progeny (hifdh al nasl)
5. protection of property rights (hifdh al maal)
In maqasid al shariat, there is no mention on the approach of how one achieves the protection. It is neither natural, nor modern intervention. If either one proves it is better than the other, say to protect one’s life, than we are to choose the better method. In preserving life, it is in fact WAJIB to choose a better method.
OBSTETRIC, HOME BIRTH AND ACTIVE MANAGEMENT OF THIRD STAGE LABOUR (AMTSL)
Obstetric discipline whether in Malaysia or abroad has gathered almost enough data on the risk of home deliveries, our grandmothers’ generations had endured.

There were post delivery bleeding because placenta would not come out which needs blood transfusion, there were cases of cord around neck that babies came out with breathing difficulty that he/she needed ventilator, there were cases that mothers endured prolonged labour that Caesarean section was inevitable. All these need hospital settings.
Injecting certain medicine to make the uterus contract faster to avoid bleeding, as well as helping mother delivering the cord, a procedure called control cord traction (CCT) are procedures in the active management of third stage labour (AMTSL). Yes, these will definitely involve chemicals, help from others and machines. But as I said, the maqasid shariah dictates the importance of preserving life, not the method.

QAWAID AL SHARIAT
This brings us to another concept which is the 5 principles of law (qawaid al shariat):
1. The principle of motives
2. The principle of certainty
3. The principle of injury
4. The principle of hardship
5. The principle of custom
In the principle of certainty (yaqeen), it is stated that a certainty cannot be voided, changed or modified by an uncertainty (al yaqeen la yazuulu bi al shakk).
It stress that any change in treatment or human behaviour should not be based on the new evidence that is not at the level of certainty. The principle has graded the level of knowledge in decreasing order of certainty as below:
Yaqeen (certain)
Ghalabatul Dzon (predominant conjecture)
Dzon (conjencture)
Syakk (doubt)

In medicine, to be certain on important decision, one has to be on the ghalabatul dzon level based on the facts (from experimental, observation, literatures) that he/she has. A 50-50 chance is not enough.
This requires research and studies. Therefore, evidence based medicine with adequate research, is very much Islamic as it provides the objective measure of Qawaid Al Shariat.
I therefore could not comprehend people who reject modern medicine on the grounds that it is less Islamic.
The case where the mother was reported to die because of retained placenta more than a few hours for waiting for it to be expulse naturally, is very much regretted. Studies have shown that AMTSL has reduced the risk bleeding or post partum haemorrhage by 60-70%. This is by comparing of only cases delivered in hospital with many other facilities available. AMTSL even in home birth, in my opinion is helpful. And if AMTSL, which has no contradiction in syariah, and proven in studies to have greater benefit, by the law of preserving life, should be a mother’s choice.
In summary, modern medicine is to reduce all these risks. It’s not intended to cause hardships to mother.
But mothers who nevertheless had to endure hardships because they delivered in hospitals, and they had to share facilities with other patients, knew very well that all those were for the sake of their babies.
So when a mother would like to choose whether it’s a home or a hospital delivery, please weigh your option carefully. Giving birth to enjoy home atmosphere, as I read from the many reasons given by mothers over related blogs or forum, should be rethink by the question: Whose interest do you have in mind, yours….. or the baby’s ?
As for this 2nd case of maternal death reported, al Fatihah. My condolences and may Allah grants great sabr to the family.

Finally competent ^_^

Assalamualaikum wbt,
Masha Allah, it has been a while i'm not writing a blog post(err, but a month is not too long though).
And i think it is not too late to wish Eid Mubarak 1434H to all Muslims ^_^
Taqabalallahu minna wa minkum.
Come, lets fast for another 6 days insyaAllah.

Alhamdulillah, last week was the end of my P license, now i am proud of holding the competent driving license. I know its kinda late at this age compared to my peers about getting a driving license but never mind, at least i can finally say 'yes, i can drive!'.

I drive in Penang for most of the time, and trust me Penang is a real 'training field' to all drivers-not only to the newbies like us. With lots of motorcyclists on your front, left n right, lots of luxurious car drove by rich people that having 'problem' with their car signal (i wonder if they have forgotten their signal button) and many more driving attitudes, I am afraid I may have some of the 'driving traits' of the Penang people.

Accidents records for the past 2 years:
1. With a motorcycle that was parked improperly at the corner. I caused my friend's car kemek sikit :( and need to pay to that guy for breaking his rear lamp.
2. I scratches my mom's car by hitting the divider on my parking area in Penang.

Off record:
1. One long scratch on the car's door, the time of incident is not known. Proton's mechanic said it may be cause by the motorcyclist.

Above all, i just want to say this: every skill that you have, make sure it would benefit your deen, family, and society. Truly, you will be benefited at the end.

Drive with bismillah :)

Tentang hati

Al-Qalbu,

Jika buruk kondisinya, maka buruklah keseluruhan jasadnya.

So, jom jaga hati ^__^

        ******************************************************************************************
"Wahai Tuhan yang membolak balikkan hati,
Tetapkanlah hati kami di dalam agamaMu
di dalam ketaatan kepada perintahMu.."

sesungguhnya dia mengagungkan Allah.
Sesiapa mencintai orang yang mencintai Allah,
sesungguhnya dia mencintai Allah.'

5 years and countinggg :D

Assalamualaikum wbt

Alhamdulillah, it has been five years now since i started blogging. Technically, 4 years and a month.
Quite often i read again my old posts, and reflect upon how did i behave since the last 5 years and how did i change until who am i today.
Yang pasti, I love to write and most of the time I write as a reminder to myself.
I will laugh, grin, or feel ashamed whenever I read on posts that reveal how immature my thoughts back then.

When I was in secondary school, I tried to keep a personal diary but it didn't lasts long. I was only able to keep it for two years, and khalas. That's it. I lost my interest on writing daily things.
And when one day I found my form-3 diary, I felt like to throw it away as I hate to read most of the thing that I wrote inside it! Weird enough, I was actually felt uneasy to read 'the immature me' as I scanned through every page of the diary.
Well, of course it contained lots of memories but to read how did I feel about certain things/person/topic, I became disappointed with my old-self. The moment I found the diary, I already know such thing is wrong, and such thing is right which I never knew when I was only 15. So, fair enough la Huda. No need to be emotional with your past~huhu.

Another thing is-you can never remember everything that happen in your life. So having a blog is the perfect way to kinda 'immortalize' the memory. Heh, nothing is immortal anyway but human memory needs repetition to remember better. The feelings-happy, sad, angry, heartbroken are all translated into words. The reflections, news, thoughts are also included here.

Sometimes I like to write current issue, so it need me to do some research before I write it down. Due to time constrain, sometimes I am unable to make a blog post about it. But I will try to at least post the link, news etc in my blog or even in facebook.

Well, alhamdulillah writing is still my passion until now.

InsyaAllah

Muhasabah 23

“Selamat hari jadi, sahabat!”. Begitu laung rakan-rakanku.
“Selamat hari tua!”.

Allah SWT berfirman dalam Surah Al-An’am ayat 60,

Allahuakbar.

Teringat status salah seorang rakan saya baru-baru ini;

“Ramai mampu untuk tidur malam tadi,
belum tentu ramai mampu bangun kembali pagi ini.

Mungkin ramai mampu bangun pagi ini,
belum tentu ramai mampu tidur semula malam ini.”

So true.

Oleh itu rakan-rakan semua, jangan pernah lupa mengucapkan rasa syukur setiap kali mampu membuka mata melihat dunia.

Q n Q

Quality versus Quantity.

Aduh, mereka memang mengetuk hati saya.
Namun semestinya saya tidak menafikan kehebatan senior-senior sekalian yang will always be role model saya hingga kini.

Sedekah jariah? ‘Kerja pun belum, takat pakai duit biasiswa bulan-bulan ade laa sikit.’

Ilmu yang bermanfaat? ‘Mengaji pun tak abes lagi, benda-benda yang dah blaja dulu-dulu banyak plak dah lupa.’

Doa anak yang soleh? ‘Ops,belum kahwin lagi laa’

(reference from Hadis Riwayat Muslim)

‘Ish, asyik-asyik sebut akhirat!’

Mestilah, sebab saya percaya kepada hidup selepas mati! Anda bagaimana?!

Everyone who has taken by death asks for more time,
while everyone who still has time makes excuses for procrastination.

Lagi sekali teringat pada suatu riwayat mengenai soalan Khalifah Umar Al-Khattab RA kepada sahabatnya ketika berada di dalam sebuah rumah;

“Impikanlah,” kata Saidina Umar RA.

Sahabat bertanya, “Wahai Amirul Mukminin, apa impianmu?”

Allahu rabbi.

The Boi and Kot

Assalamualaikum wbt

Bagaimana Ramadhan selama seminggu kini? Subhanallah pantas sangat rasanya masa berlalu.

Surprisingly, doctor menasihatkan dia untuk mengambil antibiotic selama 3 bulan dan no chicken at all also for 3 months. Wahh. Sampai mcm tu sekali. Dan pantang makan ayam tu, mungkin xdela betul2 ikut sangat sebabnya susah juga kalau no chicken at all at any time. Kasihan pula rasanya.

Hmm. Saya sendiri terfikir sejenak. Kempen boikot barangan Israel memang dah menjadi pengetahuan umum. Cuma kita sahaja yang menjadi factor keberkesanannya, yakni untuk mengambil the first step or not.

And I was like-Ohhhh!!!

Huhu.

Bit and pieces

Assalamualaikum wbt

InsyaAllah in this post I’ll share some bit and pieces on what I’ve gone through while studying in Dublin for two and a half years. Yup, I’ve been there just for a while but alhamdulillah it was a very nice experience for me (All thanks to Allah SWT). Some other sharing that I’ve wrote before can be found and read in under the label musafir, medical world, travelog (ops, i haven’t write my travelog about Spain yet!), ghuraba’, etc (different labels may show the same blog posts)

1. Learnt Islam in a better way, Alhamdulillah!
People say when you are away from you comfort zone; you would value the old life/common practise very much. In my condition, I value it MORE because as a Muslim, we are the minority in Ireland. Over here, the difference between Islam and not Islam is very clear. We are far away from our own tradition and culture, which most of the time assimilated with religion until it’s hard to differentiate between Islam and tradition/culture.  (I second the effort to introduce again the Quran and Sunnah in small halaqa groups, religious gatherings etc. If you found one, join them ya!-and let’s double check our amal/ibadah with authentic hadith/Islamic scholars).

In a few occasions, I was being asked by other sister about some stuff that Malaysian did and she made me to question myself back. I mean, in term of ibadah and certain a’mal that we usually do. They made me to refer back the matter with some ustaz/ustazah that I knew and to start questioning, and applying such ibadah for a true reason/the same way the Prophet Rasulullah SAW did.

In Malaysia, you also have every single facility at the prayer area. Here, you have to be grateful on what you have. And this is where the application comes after learning the concept since we were young.

Few examples..
-Wearing ‘telekung’/prayer gown is not necessary for prayer. So you’ll watch what you wear everyday to make sure it’s suitable for salat(loose, long, no 3-quarter sleeves, hijab covering chest etc)
-Watch your step-you will use the same long skirts/trousers for salat so make sure its clean
-Always have wudu’ at all time as you might be out somewhere and the prayer time usually short esp during winter

2. Tarbiyah without laptop
This was also the title of one of my blog post that I wrote after that incident. Somebody broke into our house in January 2010 when all of us were having our jaulah/travel in UK and Republic Czech for two weeks. There were three of us in that little house, and two laptops were missing including mine. I was stunned by this incident (just imagine-somebody had broke into your house, and he might does it again-who knows-so being inside of the house is not 100% safe anymore!) and starting from that moment, I never feel safe especially at night and I got a new habit of hiding my laptop every morning before I go to the college/hospital. I bought a notebook instead, so it is easier for me to bring it anywhere.
There is no safer place in this world. Doesn’t matter where you live, the danger is still there. Above all, nothing can happen except by Allah’s will, so ask for His protection.

3. Have you ever think about others?
In Dublin, there are a LOT of halal foods. The Muslim communities have been growing from the past 30 years, so we are enjoying the facilities now. Two big mosques (Dublin Mosque-was a church before and Clonskeagh Mosque-very beautiful masyaAllah!), my college (RCSI) with newly renovated prayer room and toilet with water tap each for washing, countless halal restaurants (Arab,Pakistani, few Malaysian), halal meat and groceries and many interesting events to cater the Muslims here.

Most of the airports in UK and Ireland have multifaith room-big,clean and tidy to pray-and some also have their own wudu’ area!(this is the best part)

During my first year, I went to Republic Czech to visit some of my KMB friends there (in Prague, Olomouc, and Hradec Kralove). I was so touched by their story-and they made me realized to never take for granted everything that Allah gave to us, doesn’t matter how small it is to our eyes. Halal meat was only found in Prague, so if you live in Olomouc/Hradec, you have to take 3-hours train journey to Prague to get some of them. Back and forth, 6 hours spent only to have halal meat at home. The only instant option to eat at home is fish. In university, they pray in a small store room; brothers and sisters have to take turn to pray(I’m not sure whether I am exaggerating here, but this is what I remembered back in 2010 and I heard things are getting better now alhamdulillah ie more halal food available, first mosque was now open in Hradec Kralove etc). For Friday prayer, in uni/schools where there are no prayer room available, they use the hall/basketball court instead.

4. ‘Izzah to be a Muslim
When you’re living in a small Muslim community, meeting a Muslim as you walk down the road (esp Muslim women because they are easily spotted with hijab) can change your day. They smile and give salam to you (or you give salam first-ini lebih aula/utama), and after that you’ll feel so blessed by their greetings-especially when we are travelling somewhere out from Dublin/Ireland.

I won’t frequently get this feeling back in Malaysia because majority of us are Muslim so the culture to spread the salam is not there as it means too much to give then.
The same things also happened in Dublin city centre. A lot of Muslim, a lot of Malaysian, so you just ignore each other unless you know them before.

Other than this, you’ll also find the mosques in Western countries would function as a true mosque. This means the mosque here becomes the centre for people to interact and doing their daily activities (in mosque area, there are schools, day care, halal shops, restaurant, groceries etc). In country where majority are Muslims ie Malaysia, the additional role of a mosque has been taken by a structured system)

5. Err, ISOC? Why so sudden? and Da'wah to non-Muslim
Being involved in Islamic Society (ISOC) is one of the most wonderful things that I had in Dublin (other than this is meeting my sisters/akhawat here. subhanalllah i missed them so much). I was able to learn so many things about their different culture and experiences. Despite these differences, we are working in ISOC under the same motivation: for the sake of Allah, for Islam in Ireland.

Anyway, my involvement in ISOC was actually unplanned but now I thanked to Allah for giving me this chance. I loved to ask their opinion regarding political issues currently happening in Arab countries ie Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain and Syria because I think they knew better as their family belongs there.

There are also a few incidences that made me to reflect back what I’ve got so far:
-i was chatting with my Egyptian friend about so many things, and she suddenly came out with this statement: ‘You Malaysian know a lot about da’wah! Why don’t you share with us?!’.Err, i was quite shocked with that honest line. As they came to know that Malaysian here has a lot of tarbiyah programmes ie halaqa and tazkirah, daurah, winter and spring gathering-and they were asking if it possible for them to join too! Alhamdulillah, FOSIS(Federation of Student Islamic Society)and ISOC are one who responsible to cater these international students. I am glad to know that they’re also organizing winter gathering starting in 2010.

-some seniors in ISOC knew Malaysian very well. Commonly we are shy and silent, especially when you have to speak in English in a big crowd. One day a brother asked some opinion from the members of halaqa, and as usual Malaysian was among the majority in that room-but still, silence. And he suddenly said: “Come on bro, 3 years of usrah-what did you get? Share with us!” Yup, 3 years of usrah, maybe more for some people who started since their A-level/IB program. It reflects whether you are actively applying your knowledge or only became ‘penulis nota tazkirah terbaik’(quoted, and i like this very much. teguran yg membuatkan kita berfikir!)

-there is one sister, who constantly check everything she does to make sure it doesn’t against the quran and hadith.”Sister Huda! Can I ask you one question? Do you know the hadith about cleanliness is part of deen? Is it actually half or part of deen? I ask you because I think you know this!”.”Sister Huda! What do you think about this idea?” “ Sister Huda, do you know this”-etc etc. Honestly, I never learn Quran and hadith subject at school, as I came from a science school. Most of us learnt Quran and hadith by informal teaching which was beyond the classroom(at home, halaqa, etc). Her passion in doing things motivated me to think like her.

-One important thing to discover when you come here: DA’WAH TO NON MUSLIM (it is actually equally important in Malaysia, but I was less exposed to comparative religion compared in Dublin). Yes, this is very important as we are the minority here. Local people don’t know much about Islam, so we are there to explain! I learnt how to answer the non-muslims questions using a structured answer so you won’t miss the BIG thing which is to introduce them to the Oneness of God and to accept Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him as the Last Messenger.

People may come from various background-academician, professionals, philosophers, teenagers searching their purpose of life and even people who want to challenge the Muslim. My first ‘official’ involvement(non-official semestinya di tepi jalan, bus stop, kelas, kedai etc) in da’wah to non-muslim was when I joined the Dublin Mosque Open Day and da’wah stall during Islamic Awareness Week(IAW) organized by ISOC. Both of the events totally gave me an adrenaline rush! (my recent involvement: Daurah Da’wah Fardhiyah last winter-the content was superb masyaAllah). At the same time I was worried of my little knowledge and English fluency-but as the time went by the skills improved alhamdulillah.

Some of their question can be read here: Mosque Open Day-Expect the Unexpected (with my immature answer-that was back in April 2010)
How to give a better, concise answer? My suggestion is to watch the youtube videos from many popular and outstanding Islamic scholars ie Dr Zakir Naik, Yoshua Evans, Yusof Estes, Nouman Ali Khan, Sheikh Tawfique Chowdury, Hamza Andreas, and many more. Just type the question, and you’ll find the videos that would related to it insyaAllah.

6. Irish Movement for Palestinian
Yes, an Irish Movement. I can confirm that they also involved in May 2010 Freedom Flotilla with Mavi Marmara. They frequently opened a stall in Grafton Street for people to join them. And they still sending aid to Palestinian till now, while raising the awareness among the Irish to boycott the Israel occupation. It is embarrassing to be a Muslim and just ignoring the cause!

7. Hijab causing vitamin D deficiencies?
“People who are covered from head to toe are more likely to get vitamin D deficiencies.”
He stated that clearly while giving us a glimpse and then he continue on the topic.
“Psst! Did you notice that? He was looking at us just now”, said my friend who sat next to me in the lecture hall.
The doctor made me wondered if there any study has proved the statement he just said. Well it’s obvious that Muslim women are not well exposed to the sunlight-the logic is there.
I browse in Pubmed, and found a few articles that can be read from this link:

1. Prevalence and predictors of vitamin D inadequacy amongst Lebanese osteoporotic women.

I used the keyword 'Muslim women' and combine it with 'vitamin D deficiencies'. It gave few more articles on this topic but I think these three were the closest to what I was looking for. Well, vitamin D deficiencies are not solely cause by insufficient sun exposure-many other factors influence the vitamin D level ie kidney failure, dietary intake, malabsorption etc. In fact, we have to consider the geography, climate and culture when the sunlight exposure is taken as a variable.

8. The bus, taxi driver, internet worker, ...
The Dublinbus driver: “Hey, are you a Muslim? Will your country punish you if you don’t
cover your hair? Are they gonna throwing stone on you if you take it
                                off?”

The taxi driver: “Don’t you ever want to wear skirts like those girls on the street? Why do
                         you have to cover everything?!”
(when we reach the destination)”Ok, I hope to meet you again with the
                        skirts, ladies!”

The internet worker who came to set up our wireless modem: “Why do you have to cover yourself when I came in? I don’t believe in religion. I know people like you have your own stupid belief that you adhere to.”

An 80+ years old (I think) lady in Athens: “Why do you have to cover your hair? Are your God and Prophet so jealous so they made this rule? You will look more beautiful without it!”

Some random people: “Both of you are Muslim, right? Why are you covered but your friend aren't?"

And etc.
You can see that wearing hijab is a BIG issue for them, and a never-ending question that Muslim women have to deal when we’re in the Western countries. The most important thing that I learnt is how to answer their questions + promoting the faith at the same time. I need to show to them that hijab is not a burden and this is the way of protecting myself-which means Islam is protecting the women.
Sometimes I felt unsatisfied with the answer that I gave to them(it was not easy to find the right word for the right people-it was really depend on how they view the hijab) so I did study a bit on how to deal with non-Muslim questions and I joined few da'wa courses here.

9. Our controversial lecturer
We only met him once, only on that very day because he was an imported lecturer. He made us (Muslims) felt totally uneasy throughout the one-hour lecture and it was obviously bias! He was giving hundred of examples of torture in Muslim countries, where he was born. He left the students confused after exposing the story, and some people may ended up with wrong perception towards Islam.
What happened after the lecture?
Silence. Many of us were looking to each other. And regret for not having the bravery to speak out.
Sigh.

10.Twice with Jehovah Witness
Can be read here: bismillah aja
(the second time he came, i gave him the booklets that I forgot to give during the first meeting. Allah izin pertemuan kali kedua, i was rushing to catch the bus because i was late for an appointment!tak sempat nak berbincang panjang..)

11.Argh! Language barrier! @_@
No comment! I’m still practising and will continue to learn the language. The key is to practise and read more. Sometimes you’re being force to speak when there are no friends around to help you.
Well, you can also notice that I don’t include any bombastic words in my English posts in this blog-and honestly I can feel that my vocab isn’t improved so much. Hmm, the environment really affects your survival. 300 people in one batch and almost 1/3 of them are Malaysian. You totally need to push yourself to practise the language!
Arabic language, I still need guidance. I felt bad for not knowing to speak Arabic when I met Muslims who can’t speak English. It happened in Turkey and Spain-and I felt so helpless. A sister was crying in the airport and we just couldn’t understand what she said! :(
In learning the tafseer of Quran, knowing Arabic is the key to understand better. Anyway alhamdulillah I am grateful for choosing Arabic over Japanese language during my secondary school-mom always knows best :)
Note: language barrier is also a problem for Malaysian students during bed-side teaching.

12. Dublin one-day floods
I was never involved in any floods in Malaysia, and Allah gave me such experiences in Dublin. It was a rare incident ever for the Irish, and two persons were killed on that night. Read more here: sekali bah, sekali pantai berubah

13. More to share from jaulah and gatherings: clink on the link to MEKAR and Jaulah Turkey part 1, part 2 dan Greece sahaja.

Well, I do have a lot more to tell but these are what it is basically. Not so much about the hospital and patient, as I am about to discover the clinical world in Penang insyaAllah.
These are my bit and pieces that I would like to share, and verily, Allah is the best Reminder.

I seek forgiveness from Allah for my weaknesses and wrongdoings from the day I born, till I die.
I seek forgiveness from Allah for the words that I said, I wrote and I typed and there is no other better Protector except You, O’ Allah.
I seek Your Mercy in all circumstances that I face, as I am weak but You give the strength, I am poor but You give the wealth, I am sick but You give the health.
I bear witness there is no God but He, and Prophet Muhammad SAW is His Messenger.

Allahu a’lam.
